Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

The birth of Ava DuVernay took place on the 24th day of August 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay started to discover her creative and artistic side as a child due to her aunt Denise. Her aunt worked the night shift as nurse so she could follow her passion for art literature and theater during the day. The aunt introduced DuVernay to the film of 1961 West Side Story and DuVernay fell in love with it. DuVernay realized after watching her mother's examples of how art could serve as an activist vehicle. DuVernay's mother also had a an awareness of social issues and showed DuVernay how to communicate by means of artwork. DuVernay resided in Compton throughout her life, but would spend every summer with her father's extended family in Lowndes County Alabama. The father of DuVernay's mother recalled civil rights marches on the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the nearby town of Selma, Alabama. DuVernay was strongly influenced by the summers she spent in Selma, and later directed an documentary on the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay completed Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood in the state of California in 1990. She attended University of California Los Angeles for a degree in English as well as African American Studies. When she was studying, DuVernay began to consider producing for the broadcast media. She was an CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was appointed to monitor and investigate the residence of an individual juror. After being disappointed in journalism by the tasks she was given, DuVernay decided to pursue an interest in public relations. DuVernay was offered a job straight from college, working as a young publicist for a studio. She was promoted to the position and set up her own company for public relations named The DuVernay Agency in 1999. In addition to PR, the company has launched lifestyle networks and promotions, like the Urban Beauty Collective.
